Aerosol Fire Suppression: Providing an Extra Layer of Protection for LFP Batteries

April 20, 2026

With the rapid adoption of residential and commercial energy storage systems and electric vehicles in the North American market, battery safety has become one of the top concerns for users.

Although LFP batteries are inherently stable, under extreme conditions they may still experience thermal runaway, which can cause flames to spread or damage surrounding equipment.

Traditional fire suppression methods, such as water-based or dry powder extinguishers, are often difficult to use inside enclosed battery units and can potentially damage the batteries or electronic devices, or even create additional hazards.

To address this, we have integrated aerosol fire suppression in some of our battery products. In the Cubix 100 pro server rack battery and so on, you can see the small block that is the aerosol module, typically installed at the top of the battery cells.

What is an aerosol?  What is the working principle of this system?

Physical suppression

Metal salt particles in the aerosol melt or vaporize at high temperatures, absorbing heat and lowering the flame temperature, which slows down the fire.

Chemical suppression

Solid particles and released metal ions in the aerosol react with active radicals in the flame, reducing the number of radicals and slowing combustion.

Reducing oxygen concentration

During the aerosol extinguishing process, inert gases such as N₂ and CO₂ are generated, which lower oxygen levels in the flame and interrupt the burning process.

We use S-type aerosol, which also has two major advantages.

Safe for electrical equipment

Title

Strontium nitrate in S-type aerosol decomposes without absorbing moisture from the air. So it does not form conductive or corrosive liquid films, which prevents damage to electrical devices.

Harmless to humans

Title

S-type aerosol mainly releases N₂, a little CO₂, and solid metal salts—all non-toxic.

When an abnormal cell temperature is detected (our aerosol activates within the temperature range of 160°C to 180°C ) or flames are present, the aerosol system is triggered, releasing particles through the designated outlets :

The solid extinguishing agent inside rapidly releases micron-sized particles into the air, forming a dense cloud.

These particles capture the free radicals generated during combustion—the “fuel” that sustains the flame—chemically interrupting the propagation of thermal runaway.

At the same time, it lowers the local oxygen concentration, effectively suppressing flame spread.

In short, aerosol fire suppression systems utilize chemical reactions combined with local environmental regulation to rapidly suppress combustion. Compared to water-based fire suppression methods, it offers a highly efficient and reliable solution.

It can respond quickly in the early stages of a fire, suppressing flame spread through chemical reactions without affecting the normal operation of batteries or related electronic equipment. This makes it particularly suitable for energy storage systems.
